William Horace Lowry passed away Saturday, April 23, 2005 in Ventura California. He had celebrated his 88th birthday on April 8th, 2005. Horace is survived by his wife of 63 years, Harriet Maxine Lowry: loving daughter Candace and son-in-law Michael Jacobsen: grand children Stacey and Dennis Lowry, Jason White and Jessica Halseth: step grandsons, Mark and Michael Jacobsen, great granddaughter Alyssa Lowry and step great grandson, Kevin Jacobsen: brothers Huette and Harry Lowry and their families, and sister-in law Susan Lowry. He was preceded in death by his son Dennis Lowry, brothers Harold, Howard and Henry and his parents, Willard and Ethel Lowry.

Horace was born in Cullman Alabama, the first of 6 boys. His greatest joys as a child were hunting in the woods with the family dogs and playing with his brothers. He moved with his family to California during the Depression years, settling in the central San Joaquin Valley. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in North Fork during this time. Horace and Maxine were introduced by mutual friends and married December 21, 1941. After living for several years in San Francisco, they returned to the Central Valley, first living in Merced and eventually returning to Madera where they lived for 50 years. They moved to Ventura in 1997 to live near their daughter.

During World War II, Horace worked in the ship yards in the San Francisco Bay area. After that, he worked as a grocery store clerk, a baker, and a house painter. He eventually went to work for Madera Unified School District in the maintenance department at Madera High School and retired after 15 years of dedicated service. He was a member of the Madera Avenue Bible Church and served as a Deacon for several years.

Although Horace had an incomparable work ethic, his dedication to his family and his strength, honesty and kindness toward others are the qualities that have left an indelible mark upon those who knew him. Most of us, his family, attribute to him any good qualities we possess, and feel lucky to have such a role model to look up to. Thank-you, Grandpa, for all that you have given us in life.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 28th at 11am, at Jay Chapel in Madera. Burial will follow at Arbor Vitae Cemetery. In honor of this wonderful man, hug those you love and remember, everyday you live is a gift to be cherished.
