Nellie spent her early years on a farm near Rapid City, SD. Only when considered in light of historical events in South Dakota does one realizes how much a pioneer generation she was. She was born just a few years after Custer's Last Stand; she lived through the SD dust bowl. Her father mined during the Black Hills gold rush.
In later years, she converted and volunteered as an altar lady for St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Ogden, Utah.
