Nellie was a long time resident of Ogden, Utah where she assisted her husband, Bud Benway, with his shoe repair business. Nellie also worked part time for other businesses in the area. Prior to marriage, Nellie worked for the telephone company for some time in a day when telephone weren't "push a button." The work required a sharp memory, agility and quick problem solving. She was also employed by the 4 Season's in Santa Barbara.

Nellie spent her early years on a farm near Rapid City, SD. Only when considered in light of historical events in South Dakota does one realizes how much a pioneer generation she was. She was born just a few years after Custer's Last Stand; she lived through the SD dust bowl. Her father mined during the Black Hills gold rush.

In later years, she converted and volunteered as an altar lady for St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Ogden, Utah.
