Son of Judge David Hopkins 1748-1813 and Hannah Parish Hopkins 1756-1833.

Husband of Susan Dimock Smith Hopkins 1791-1851. Father of Ellen 1815-27, Harriet Cross 1817-92, David Hamilton Hopkins 1820 NY-1870 IN, Jane Foster 1824-77, Ira E 1827 NY-1908 OR, Charles Smith Hopkins 1828-52 and Emily Ellen 1833-54.

David moved in 1816 to Cayuga Co, NY until 1834 when he moved to Michigan. He first settled on the river below Niles where he lived for two years, then moved to Volinia where he died 4/7/1851 at 56 years, his wife surviving him but two days. He was a great hunter, trapper and bee hunter. He served a number of terms as Supervisor and one term as County Commissioner. Source: History of Cass County, Michigan, 1882
