The son of Charles and Rose Mahalie Keeling Martin, Jess served in the army before and during W. W. II. He returned unscathed and decided to pay a surprise visit to his family at Christmas.

He rode the bus from his home in Elgin, IL to Albion and hitched a ride with Alan Gill to Golden Gate on a windy, icy night. The car hit a patch of ice and crashed, killing Jess, Alan and two other men. The shock of his loss was very great because it was Christmas, and he was not even expected.

He left a widow, Minnie from Burnt Prairie back in Elgin. She later remarried.
