William Leonard Ervin was born 22 September 1826, in Richlands, Onslow County, North Carolina, the son of Abner Ervin and Molcy Basden Ervin. He married Melly Colen Best on 7 September 1849. They had four children: Mary L., Melly C., Abner F., and Amanda M. Ervin. His wife Melly passed away in July 1867.

He then married Sarah "Jane" Cox on 11 September 1867. Together, they had six children: Lestina Varina, Charles Lutheria, Edward Starkey, Andrew Jackson, Aquilla Suggs and Hugh Dalton.

William enlisted 1 December 1862, fulfilling service for the Confederate States Army; enlisting with Company B, North Carolina 3rd Cavalry Regiment on 19 December 1862. Following his military service, William worked most of his life as a farmer in Onslow County, North Carolina.

The Ervin family played a large and significant role in the prosperity of Onslow County. A family cemetery was named for Abner Ervin, William's father on the original property in Richlands, well maintained and still owned by Ervin family.

William passed from this life 6 January 1893 in Onslow County, North Carolina.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Melly; three of their children from his first marriage; twin daughters, Mary and Melly; and son, Abner F. Ervin.

A cemetery was created in his honor on White Oak River Road, near Loco area, Jacksonville, North Carolina.

OBITUARY

Mr. Wm. L. Ervin, formerly of New Berne [sic] died Friday night at his home in White Oak, Onslow County, of paralysis.

Mr. Ervin was 70 years of age. He leaves a wife and a large family of children, also an aged father.
