Louise was the daughter of Joseph Riley Curtis (1826-1862, burial unknown) and Anna Eleanor Cunningham. She was born in the old state capital of Cahaba. She lost her father to the Civil War when she was only a year old. About 1865, Louise, with her mother and sister, abandoned Cahaba along with every other resident when the county seat moved to Selma. They settled in Montgomery and remained there until 1870, when her mother remarried. They then moved to the (now) historic home of Montebrier in Brierfield in Bibb Co., AL. At some point, she moved to Columbiana and for a time lived with her aunt and uncle Adelaide Curtis Mardis and Napoleon Bonaparte Mardis. After serving several years as a teacher, she married C. B. Powell on December 14, 1889 at the Shelby Springs Resort near Columbiana. They had 4 children and two grandchildren. She helped raise her grandchildren after their parents divorced. She was survived by 3 children, 2 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.
