Annie Cunningham was born in Co. Wicklow, Ireland, to (traditionally) James Cunningham and Sarah (Johnson) Cunningham. She is said to have been born in the Vale of Avoca (valley of the Avoca River) and baptized at the church of St. Kevin in Glendalough. She immigrated with her parents and 2 brothers (another brother immigarated later) in about 1850 to New Orleans. In 1855, they moved to Mobile, AL, but both her parents died that year (her mother of yellow fever in New Orleans while visiting friends, her father by falling overboard during a storm on Mobile Bay), leaving her and her brothers as orphans. She was employed in a millinery shop by her parents' friend Mr. Giovanni (traditionally), possibly in New Orleans. She seems to have moved to Montgomery at some point where she encountered Joseph Riley Curtis, then Marshal of Selma. They married in Montgomery on Feb. 8, 1858 and had four children and moved to Cahaba (1860) before he enlisted and died in the Civil War (1862). She later married N. B. Stanford on Jan. 8, 1865 in Dallas Co., but he disappeared and the marriage had to be annulled (traditionally). When the county seat moved to Selma (1866), she moved to Montgomery and met widowed state representative Jesse Wilkerson Mahan. They were married July 8, 1870 in Montgomery and had 5 children. She remained in Brierfield until her death. I have a couple of pictures of her and one oil painting of her. One picture is from 1910, but the others and the painting appear to be from the 1860-1870 timeframe.

Children with Joe Curtis:
1. Kathrine Giovanni (Curtis) Simmons (1858-1927), wife of John Castle Simmons, possibly died in Jasper, AL
2. Alabama Curtis (1860-?), possibly died young in Cahaba or Montgomery, AL
3. Anna Louise (Curtis) Powell (1861-1942)
4. Joe Curtis (c1862-?), possibly died young in Cahaba or Montgomery, AL

Children with Jesse Mahan:
1. Jesse W. Mahan (c1871-?)
2. Adelaide Eleanor Mahan (1872-1959)
3. James Napoleon Mahan (1874-1882)
4. Christabel (Mahan) Baird (?-?), wife of Abraham Dubois Baird
5. Kevin Cunningham Mahan (1876-1928)
