'T. P. [Thomas Pembroke] Poteet, aged seventy-eight years, who was almost a lifelong resident of Lamar county, died at 7:30 o'clock yesterday morning at the home of one of his sons, C. A. [Charles Appleton] Poteet, on South Twenty-fifth street, after an illness of several months. He was born in Tennessee and came to Lamar county in 1841 when he was a small child with his father, T. R. H. [Thomas Richard Horn] Poteet, one of the old settlers, who first located at what was then known as 'Pinhook,' which he had the distinction of giving the name of Paris, and who later moved down near Biardstown and took up a headright on Hickory creek known as the T. R. H. Poteet headright. The deceased grew up from a child to manhood in Lamar county and married Miss Lucretia Neathery, the daughter of Wesley [John "Wesley"] Neathery, also an old settler. Until his retirement from active life he pursued the occupation of a farmer all the time with the exception of four years spent in the army during the Civil War. He was in active service east of the Mississippi river all the time that he was in the army and was with General Bragg in his march on Kentucky. He is survived by five children, all sons, his wife having died twenty-five years ago. The sons are Gibbons [William "Gibbons" Thomas] Poteet, cashier of the First National Bank of Roxton; Charles A. [Charles Appleton] and Hugh [Hugh "Bo" Tilamn] Poteet, who are in the cotton business in Paris; J. P. [James Pembroke] Poteet, a well known traveling man, and A. W. [Allen Wesley] Poteet, who is in the hardware business at Glazier, TX. The funeral service will be held at 10 O'clock this morning from the home of C. A. [Charles Appleton] Poteet, conducted by Elder Lee Garrett, and interment will be at Evergreen cemetery. Members of Albert Sidney Johnston Camp United Confederate Veterans, of which he was a member, are requested by George T. Henley, the commander, to meet at the court house promptly at 9 o'clock to attend the funeral.'
