Following several years of illness, the Rev. W.W. Murray came to the close of his useful pilgrimage, January 10, 1957, in the Methodist Hospital in Hattiesburg.
After a period of teaching he was licensed to preach July 4, 1896 at Decatur. He served as Junior preacher of the Carthage Circuit in 1901, and in 1902 he was appointed pastor of the Wayne Mission. While serving the Ellisville Mission in 1903, he organized Mt. Zion Methodist Church. At the end of this year he was admitted on trial into the Mississippi Annual Conference which met in Meridian. He then served a number of strong circuits, closing his active ministry in 1935 at Escatawpa on account of poor health.
He built a home in the Mt. Zion community where he was an inspiration as a spiritual leader and teacher of the Adult Bible Class.
His funeral services were held in the Mt. Zion Church, conducted by the pastor, the Rev. E.D. Simpson, assisted by district superintendents, the Rev. Van R. Landrum and the Rev. J. Melvin Jones. Twenty-one preachers were present and served as honorary pallbearers.
Brother Murray is survived by his wife, Mrs. Laura Taylor Murray, three sons, the Rev. William Murray, pastor of Hawkins Memorial Church, Meridian, Charles, Ellisville, Orbey, Laurel; one daughter, Mrs. Ina Armstrong, Ellisville; four sisters, Miss Ida Murray, Leakesville, Mrs. A.C. Henton(sic - should read Hinton), Magee, Mrs. M.N.Walker, Somerland (sic) and Mrs. Dollie McKay, Pelahatchie; one brother, Henry Murray, Leakesville; one aunt, Mrs. Josephen Cochran Murray; eight grandchildren and 3 great-granchildren.
The following nephews served as pallbearers: J. H. McKay, J.D. McKay, W. G. Sorrell, J.E. Sorrell, Carter Walker and Singleton Walker (sic - should both read Watkins).
