William "Bill" Burchell grew up on San Francisco Bay. Working out of Eureka for years, he was a respected captain. His ruddy mariner's face featured a walrus mustache and usually a toothpick dangled from the side of his mouth as he talked.

The veteran skipper and his two crewmen aboard the a 46-foot trawler Marian Ann vanished one evening in September as they fished for rock cod about 40 miles northwest of Eureka. A subsequent investigation using a submersible robot found the commercial fishing vessel sitting upright and apparently undamaged on the sea floor. The cause of the sinking remains a mystery.
