CIVIL WAR VETERAN

Enlisted Jan 11, 1864 as a Private in Company M of 7th Heavy Artillery Regiment at 20 yrs of age. On March 10, 1864 transferred to Co B. He was wounded in action on June 16, 1864 at Petersburg.

His brother Adrian Oliver Springer (1840-1905) also served in this unit.

The 7th Heavy Artillery Regiment of NY saw some of the heaviest action of any unit in the Civil War and suffered incredible loss of life and injuries. See the book "Carnival of Blood; The Civil War Ordeal of the Seventh New York Heavy Artillery" by Robert Keating.

After the war, Charles settled in the city of Albany where he first married a woman named Frances, who died at an early age after having had at least three children.

He then on July 29, 1887 married Lydia "Lilli" Alexander McCallan Sanders, who had previously been married. By her, he had several additional children.

Charles apparently suffered from post traumatic stress syndrome and as result became an alcoholic. After many difficult years, he committed suicide.
