Aaron Putnam Springer was the son of Oliver Springer and Barbara Putnam (B. Feb 25, 1778).

On March 14, 1833 in Rotterdam, he married Anna Maria Schermerhorn (Dec 18, 1811-May 25, 1878), who was the daughter of John Bartholomew Schermerhorn and Gity Van Patten. Aaron and Anna went on to have at least nine children.

For much of his life, Aaron worked as a shoemaker in Schenectady where he owned his own business and advertised in the City Directory as a shoemaker and harness maker. In 1850 he supplemented his income by working as a census taker in Schenectady county.

CIVIL WAR VETERAN
On Sept 24, 1861, he enlisted in Company E of the 81st Regiment of NY State Volunteers at the age of 52 yrs! His Civil War documents show that he reported himself to be just 44 yrs of age. In Feb of 1862 he transferred to Co F and that summer fought under General McCellan. At the Battle of Fair Oaks he was injured and then hospitalized in Washington, DC before obtaining a leave of absence to return home. On July 29, 1862 while back home, he died of disease.

Two of his sons, Adrian Oliver and Charles, influenced by his service later enlisted in and fought in the Civil War.

Aaron's service to our nation has been memorialized in Rufus Clark's book The Heroes of Albany.
