John Henry Day
John H. Day was born September 1, 1870 in Tennessee, son of John Henry, and Susan Halstead Day. He was the oldest child of a family that included three boys and three girls. John's brother's were; Charles Day and James Day. His sisters were; Ida Anna (Day) Seay ,Lillie Lee Davis and Bessie Day.
Early Life in Tennessee
John Henry Day's exact place of birth in Tennessee is still not certain. Many of his family believe it was either Obion or Lake County. However, several of his children's birth/death certificates list "Madison County, Tennessee" as their father's place of birth.
His parents, John H. Day Sr. and Susan "Susie" (Halstead) Day were married in Rutherford County, Tennessee in 1869. Susie and her Halstead family were already living in this part of Tennessee before the 1850's.
John Sr., also a farmer most of his life, moved the family through out Tennessee. Records show that they lived in Maury County in 1880 and Lake County in 1900.
In 1899 John Day Sr. passed away in Obion, TN., according to John Jr.'s eldest daughter Lena "Eugenia" Pritchett. She wrote about this in 1985 in a personal 8 page letter to a nephew telling the "Day family history". She wrote:
"Papa's dad died at age of 46. Had pneumonia. He was night watchman on the river at the time. When steamboats came in he carried a lantern and waved them in. Papa helped him. He was oldest son and he helped him farm. His father died in 1899. He farmed one year for his mother after his father died. He quit, then helped his mother sell the farm, the machinery and cow and brood."
Shortly after John Sr. passed away the family left Tennesse and parted ways. This would be the last time some of them would ever be seen or heard from ever again. John Jr.'s mother Susan and his two youngest sisters moved to Campbell, MO., as confirmed in the 1910 federal census. His sister Ida was married and living in KY. by then. John's two brothers Charlie and James Day went separate ways as well. The family didn't know of their fates. They only heard second hand stories through the years from their in-laws and others who claimed to have possibly made their acquaintance. John Jr.'s daughter also wrote:
"Papa said his brother Charlie married a little black head French woman the year before he quit farming for his mother and he left and took his wife and little baby boy and said he was going on the gold rush and find gold and he never did hear from him anymore."
Unbeknown to the family, Charlie Day,with his wife and son, moved to Aberdeen, WA. He died there in 1937. Brother James Day's death is still unknown.
Move to Missouri
John Jr. moved to the bootheel in southeast Missouri when the family split up just before 1900. First living in Samos, MO. (Mississippi County) for a while, then Wyatt, MO. He found work at Saw Mills and lived in boarding houses at the time before eventually farming. He then moved to Selkirk, MO. and met the love of his life, Rhoda Lee Cooper.
On April 16, 1904 in Cairo, Illinois, John Henry Day and Rhoda Lee Cooper were united in marriage.
Children
John and Rhoda Day were said to have had eleven children in total. Four of them died at birth or infancy.
1. John Lee "Johnny": Drowned at 22.
2. & 3. Twins: A boy and girl. Born April 7, 1906. Said to have both died moths later.
4. Lena "Eugenia": Married Harley Pritchett. Died at the age of 95.
5. Henry Clayton: Married Delphia Adams. Died at the age of 87.
6. Amelia Day. She was born in December of 1912, but died just two weeks later.
7. Ethelo: Married twice. J. L. Jennings and Bill Simpkins. She died at the age of 77.
8. Charles Columbus "Charlie": Married Margaret Denefeld. Died at the age of 87.
9. James Franklin "Jim": Married twice. Geraldine Ratliff and Mildred Barker. He died at the age of 59.
10. Calvin Roy: Married Geneva "Imogene" Jackson. He died at the age of 64.
11. Earl B. Day. Born in 1927, Earl died less than eight months later from pneumonia.

On August 18, 1936 in East Prairie, Missouri, John Henry Day died. The cause of death is listed as "ulcer of the stomach". He was just two weeks shy of his sixty-sixth birthday. He is buried in Dogwood Cemetery, near East Prairie, Missouri.
