Born in Missouri in 1899. The son of William Frederick Kermen and Mary Ann (Gruber) Kermen. The family moved West that same year to Cle Elum, Washington. They also lived in Nagrom and Blaine, Washington. Henry had four brothers; Raymond, William, Frederick and Clarence.
Henry married Gladys Mary Pullar on March 7, 1921. They had three children; Elaine, Gerald and Charles.
