Mario was a Tucson native who first studied photography in college in Wyoming, and he worked for the Tucson Citizen newspaper as a photographer before joining the staff of the Green Valley News in 1992. He worked for the Green Valley News for 16 years before retiring in August 2008 to focus on his health. He was well known in Green Valley for his photography and caring personality. His work was recognized in 2007 by the Arizona Newspapers Association, which presented him with its Photographer of the Year award.
Mario is survived by his wife, Darla; mother, Herminia Verdugo; brothers, Joe Marti and wife Arlene, Christopher Gravina, Marcelino Aguilar, and Ernesto Aguilar and wife Theresa; and his sister-in-law, Connie Begger and husband, Pat Tennant; brothers-in-law, Randall Begger and wife Heather, and Steven Begger and wife Danielle. He was preceded in death by his father, Mario A. Aguilar. He also had numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
A Mass will be held on Friday, February 25, 2011, 10:30 a.m. at St. Margaret Mary Church, 801 N. Grande with a viewing from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at CARRILLO'S TUCSON MORTUARY (North Chapel) 204 South Stone Ave. Interment at Holy Hope Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mario's memory can be made to the Green Valley-Sahuarita Community Food Bank, Muscular Dystrophy Association or ALS Association.
