Raney S. Slaughter, son of John and Elizabeth (Sayers) Slaughter, Jr., was born 01 Sep 1820 in Greensboro, Greene, Georgia.

The U.S. Federal Census and other historic records show that Raney lived in Greene, Georgia in the earlier years of his life, then in Chambers and Clay Counties, Alabama beginning around 1855. In 1850 and 1860 he was listed as being a farmer, and in 1870 as a school teacher.

The 1850 and 1860 Slave Schedules show that Raney was a slave holder. In 1850, he had five slaves who were enumerated in Scull Shoals, Greene, Georgia (now a ghost town). In 1860, he had eight slaves who were enumerated in Lafayette Postal District, Southern Division, Chambers, Alabama.

Raney married Nancy Leverly Credille on 22 Nov 1838 in Green Georgia. Their wedding vows were presided over by Pastor Nathan Oliver. Raney and Nancy had seven children: Elizabeth Fransinia Slaughter, Mary Ann Slaughter, Nancy Laura Slaughter, Millard Filmore Slaughter, Judson Edward Slaughter, Timothy K. Slaughter, and John William Slaughter.

Raney married Catherine Bridges on 04 Jun 1882 in Clay, Alabama. The wedding was performed in Catherine's home. The service was performed by A.J. McCain. Raney and Catherine had three children: James Shelton Slaughter, Wiley Sanford Slaughter, and Miranda Evie Slaughter.

Raney died 19 Dec 1892 in Coosa, Alabama and was laid to rest in the Mount Olive Cemetery of First Baptist Church.

His name appears as "Rainey" in many historic records, but it appears as "Raney" on his headstone. The majority of family trees and research online indicates that his middle name was "Saunders", and it appears as "Shatteen" on the Familytreedna.com website. In all historic records found by the author of this biographical sketch, Raney's middle name appears only as the initial "S".
