MARY LYNESS

Mary, the nine-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Lyness, of near Ryan, died in a hospital at Waterloo last week, following an operation which was performed in the hope that her life might be prolonged after she had been terribly injured in an auto accident, while the family was driving to church last Sunday. It appears that Mrs. Lyness and her two children, Mary and Donald, and Willie and Susie Devine had started to drive to church at Ryan, and while attempting to pass a car on the road at a point known as Tower Hill west of Ryan, Miss Devine, who was driving the car, lost control of the machine, and car and occupants were thrown into the ditch on the side of the road. Little Mary Lyness was pinned under the car, and received internal injuries, which proved fatal. The little one was taken to Ryan and medical aid summoned. The gravity of her injuries were apparent, and as a last resort to save her life she was taken to a hospital at Waterloo, where an operation was performed. The little girl passed away during the ordeal.

This tragedy has caused a wave of sorrow to spread over the entire countryside. She was a gentle, lovable child, dutiful to her parents, and idolized by them. Her death, under such harrowing circumstances, is a blow which will shadow their lives during coming years. Friends of the family feel for them the most earnest sympathy.
