Clarence graduated from the University of Michigan in 1902 with a medical degree. He practiced for two years in Riley, Michigan. In 1904, he moved back to Galesburg and took a position in the relief department of the Chicago Burlington and Quincy Railroad and was sent to Nebraska for several months. He returned to Galesburg where he worked for the railroad until 1906. Clarence returned to private practice and in 1908 became the Knox County Physician. He was very well respected, active in his church and in the republican party.

He married Bertha May Raymer on June 8, 1904. They had one child.
