John was the twin of Mary Frances Ripley. He joined the army to serve in the Civil War, however, he became ill and was given an honorary discharge. As soon as he became well, he reenlisted for the one hundred days service. During the war, his parents moved from Ohio to Illinois. After discharge, John followed them to Galesburg. He got a job on the Chicago Burlington and Quincy Railroad as a brakeman. During his 40 years of service he was a freight conductor and a passenger conductor.

He married Letitia Bull Shephard on September 29, 1870 in Galesburg. They had five children.
