A native of Washington county, Maryland, he settled in Rushville in 1837, where he engaged in the drug trade and served as post master thirty-five consecutive years. His birth was in 1803, and in 1829 he was united in marriage to Miss Rebecca, daughter of James Tenant Sharpsburg, Virginia.

The family, consisting of nine known children, were strict members of the M.E. Church. Mr. Kalb was described as a sincere, upright and honest citizen, carrying to his grave the homage ever paid to sterling worth.
