Date of birth calculated from her age at death.

She was the daughter of James Tenant of Sharpsburg, Virginia, who (according to the biography of her son George), had run off from England in his boyhood, and became the owner of a line of steamers, and large tracts of land near Sharpsburg, Virginia. During the Rebellion, his steamers were captured, his houses and fences burned, and he found his splendid fortune "wrecked in the whirlpool of revolution. He died at the age of eighty, near Shepardstown in 1866, "a poor man in fortune, but rich in all the elements of manhood which values convictions of right and duty more highly than gold or lands."

Rebecca was married to Elijah Kalb in 1829, and they were the parents of nine known children: Amanda; James J. who married Caroline Virginia Pilcher; Mary; Margaret; Samuel; Marletha; Louisa; George E., husband of Ruth Siniff; and Mayberry who went by the surname of DeKalb, the spelling being intended to assert the title used by their ancient relative, the Baron de Kalb of the Revolutionary fame.
