In the 1840s, Mammoth Cave's environment failed as a treatment for tuberculosis, so proprietor Dr. John Croghan began promoting it as a tourist attraction soon to be know worldwide. The son of Maj. William Croghan, a surveyor and early civic leader, was also the nephew of George Rogers Clark. The remains of the Croghan family were reinterred in 1916 from the Locust Grove graveyard.
