Funeral for Helen Hayes Laney, 70, of Decatur was to be today, Oct. 8, 2003, at 11 a.m. at Shelton Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. Todd Evans officiating.
Burial was to be in Burningtree Memorial Gardens. Visitation was last night from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.
Mrs. Laney died Monday, Oct. 6, 2003, at her residence. She was born May 6, 1933, in Decatur to Jerome W. Hayes and Jemima Jacobs Hayes. She was a member of the first graduating class of Decatur High School. She worked her way through Birmingham Baptist Hospital School of Nursing and graduated in 1955. She worked as a registered nurse for more than 40 years. Being married to a career Marine, Helen pursued her profession as a registered nurse at locations of choice by the government. Some of those locations were: Santa Ana, Calif., Houston, Texas, Macon, Ga., and Moulton, Ala., and here in Decatur where she served at Decatur General as director of nursing and Parkway Medical Center from where she retired. She was most of all, a loving wife, mother and grandma.
She is survived by her husband, Luther M. Laney Sr.; a son, Luther M. Laney Jr.; two daughters, Patricia Konesky and H. Renee Laney. She was blessed by five grandchildren, Carley Konesky, Sierra Laney, Danielle Konesky, Austin Laney and Ashley Laney.
Pallbearers were to be Johnny Hayes, John Konesky, Bill Hayes, Mark Laney, Stephen Laney and Grant VanOostrom.
