Born on 25 August 1895, at Beechgrove, Coffee, Tennessee, Jemima Hoover "Nina" Jacobs was the daughter of Harry A. and Mary Ellen Jacobs.
Nina walked a considerable distance to school as did many children of that place and time period and completed the second year of high school.
I'm not exactly sure where their paths crossed, but Nina loved to share the story of her long-distance courtship with Jerome William Hayes, Sr. Jerome lived at Scottsboro, Jackson, Alabama, and Nina lived at home with her parents at Beechgrove, Tennessee, when Jerome became interested in courting her. Camping out at night and crossing a river to visit her, Jerome would ride his white horse from Scottsboro to Beechgrove. He would bring her trinkets and wildflowers he gathered along the way and lodge with her family for a couple of days. Even though Nina's father gave Jerome permission to court his daughter, her father thought a long-distance relationship would not work out. Although Nina thought that Jerome was hers and would stay in her life as well as her heart forever, her father told her that Jerome was likely to ride out of her life. But Jerome proved to be her knight on a white horse, for their long-distance love story culminated in a marriage that lasted for fifty-seven years until her death.
On 20 March 1921, Nina married Jerome, the son of John Davis Hayes and Esther A. McInturff, at Kirbytown, Marshall, Alabama. Nina and Jerome had three children. They were living at Scottsboro, Jackson, Alabama, when their first child, John Davis, who was named for his paternal grandfather, was born on 23 April 1923. When John was about five and a half years old, his brother Jerome William, Jr., was born on 08 September 1928, while they were living at Mooresville, Limestone, Alabama. On 06 May 1933, when Helen Ruby was born they were living at Decatur, Morgan, Alabama.
While they were living at Decatur, Nina taught sunday school at Fairview Baptist Church.
Nina's health began failing in 1978. She got to where she wasn't eating and lost a lot of weight. Nina was in the Summerford Nursing Home at Falkville, Morgan, Alabama, before she died. She wasn't there long before she was taken to Decatur General Hospital in Decatur. Nina died 29 September 1979, at Decatur General after suffering a stroke. She was eighty-four years old.
