Funeral services for Lewis Jerome Yates were held at reed Point, in the Evangelical church, on Sunday, January 31, conducted by the pastor the Rev. A. Roukema, assisted by Rev. H S. Tool of Columbus. A double duet composed of Mrs. A. W. Newmann Miss Elda Neumann, Mrs. Jack McLean and Mrs. A Roukema, sang "My Savior First Of All," "Oh, Think of the Home Over There," and "What a Friend We Have in Jesus." Pallbearers were O. E. Schuyler, John Rash Jack McLean, Charles Kenfield, James Friend, Sr., and Frank Meacham. Beautiful floral offerings and a congregation that filled the church spoke of the high esteem in which Mr. Yates was held in the community.
Lewis Jerome Yates was born July 24, 1866, near Mill Grove, Mo., and died at his home in Reed Point, Jan. 28, 1937, at the age of 70 years, 6 months and 4 days. He grew to manhood on his father's farm and was married to Bella Vanderpool on July 3, 1887. To this union 13 children were born, five of whom died in infancy, while eight with the widow remain to mourn him. They are: Jack of Sunnyside, Wash.; Mrs. M. A. Murry, of Livingston; Clay of Reed Point; Roscoe of Decatur, Ill.; Cordia of West Lebanon, Ind.; Mrs. Earl Cole of Prosser, Wash.; Glen of Wabash, Ind.; and Mrs. C. P. Schuyler, of Reed Point. He also is survived by one sister, Miss Mary F. Yates, of Mill Grove, Mo., and a brother, James H. Yates, of Spickard, MO., and 23 grandchildren. Mr. Yates joined the Methodist Episcopal church at the age of 17 years. Twenty-three years ago he moved to Reed Point and has resided here ever since. He was justice of the peace here for many years. Mr. Yates was a kind neighbor and true friend. His loss is keenly felt among the citizenry of the community is extended the bereaved ones.
