Grandson of William Reid Esq., James came to Hebron to teach in the "Rooster" school between West Hebron and North Hebron. He roomed with Thomas Cummings and married his daughter Jane in 1823. In 1832 he bought land on Black Creek in West Hebron with water rights. He built a dam and operated a sawmill and gristmill. Later a drying shed and a cooper shop were added.
