She moved from Saskatchewan to California in the late 1940's and ran a doctor's office in San Jose. She met Kenneth Kelly in late 1960 and they were married in September 1961. Kenneth was a widower with four children, Patricia, Pamela, Douglas, and Nancy from his first marriage. Ken and Bernie adopted a baby boy, who was born in Santa Cruz county and named him Sean Edward. Bernie has about 30 nieces and nephews.
