Donald E. Carothers
CAREY, N.C. — Donald E. Carothers, 74, of Carey, N.C., and formerly of Moline, died Friday, September 19, 2008, at Long Leaf Neuro Medical Center, Wilson, N.C.
Burial will be at Rose Lawn Memorial Estate, Moline. Memorials may be made to the Eastern North Carolina Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association. Funeral services will be Wednesday, September 24th, 10:30 a.m. at DeRoo Funeral Home, Moline. Visitation is Tuesday 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. at DeRoo Funeral Home.
Donald was born May 13, 1934, in Moline, the son of Harvey and Hettie Schild Carothers Sr. He married Janet M. Strayer, April 2, 1960, in Milan. She preceded him in death August 19, 2004.
He worked as an insurance agent in the Quad City area for many years, and later was the owner of Carothers Insurance Company, in Bettendorf.
Don attended Moline High School where he was a member of the 1951 state runner-up basketball team. He also won the Illinois state high jump title for three consecutive years.
After high school he attended Iowa University on a basketball scholarship and later transferred to Bradley University. At Bradley, he played on the 1957 NIT championship basketball team. Don also participated in football and track at Bradley and became the first three letter winner on the schools history. After graduation he was a tenth round draft choice by the Chicago Cardinals and later played for the Chicago Bears and Denver Broncos.
Don was a member of the Moline M Men's Club and the Bradley University Alumni Association.
Survivors include his daughters and sons in law, Angie and Fred Schleifer, Traverse City, Mich., Mindy and Todd Kochuyt, Cary, N.C., and Andrea and Michael DelSignore, Topsail Beach, N.C.; grandchildren, Paige, Zach, Nate, and Ellie Kochuyt, and Meagan and Sari Schleifer; and sister, Linda Carothers-Houdek, Pheonix. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Harvey Carothers Jr.
