Mr. Berndsen was the former President and CEO of Messer Construction Company. He was raised in Western Hills, graduated from Elder High School in 1939 and served in the Navy (Seabees) In World War II. He graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a B.S. in civil engineering. He was the first inductee into the Spirit of Construction Hall of Fame. His various construction projects were the Hamilton County Justice Center, The Children's Hospital Medical Center Ambulatory Care Facility Yeatman's Cove and the Serpentine Wall. Cincinnati Children's Hospital Tower was named for him. He received the Award of Excellence for the Life Long Advocacy of Cooperative Education and the Distinguished Engineering Alumni Award. He was past president of the Allied Construction Industries. He received the Boy Scouts' Silver Beaver Award for distinguished service to youth. He also served on the executive board of the Dan Beard Council of the Boy Scouts. His wife, Mary Virginia Prout Berndsen, and he were married for 55 years. They are survived by two daughters, Kathleen Ann Berndsen Snow and Patricia Joy Berndsen Jacko
