THE SNOW FIELDS

Geo Cota Succumbs at Klondike of FeverFrom a letter received by his parents on Saturday evening we learn that George Cota son of Mr. and Mrs. M Cota, who lives o Eureka Heights, had died some time ago in the Klondike country.

He was working with a cousin on Dominion Creek, fifty-five miles from Dawson and was seized with typhoid malaria, so prevalent in that country. After six weeks of sickness he passed away on the 14th of October. On account of the deadly snow his companion could not take the body to Dawson at that time so that the unfortunate young man could have decent burial, and for that reason they cached the body in the snow, and he was buried with appropriate services on October 28th. Although he was far from civilization he was afforded some medical attendance, but the disease was too powerful to be overcome by ordinary methods.

George Cota left Grass Valley in February of 1898, with his brother Alfred and Pearly Brown. When they arrived at the sheep camp, the party was caught in a snow slide, which carried away a portion of their outfit and provisions. For this reason Alfred was obliged to return home and George and Perly Brown pushed on. A few months later Mr. Brown caught the fever and succumbed and his partner survived him but a few short months.

Deceased was well known in Grass Valley where he lived nearly all his life. He was a young man of cheerful disposition, of a good strong frame and rather healthy. Among his associates he was popular and the news of his death will cause sadness. He was aged 25 years, 3 months and 11 days at the time of his death. The relatives left to mourn his death are father, mother, two brothers and a sister all of whom live in Grass Valley.
