JOSEPH COTA IS FOUND DEAD
Well Known Rancher Stricken in Field and Died When he laid Down to Rest.
Just before dark last night the dead body of Joseph Cota resident of East Main street, was found on his ranch in the Rattlesnake section. The discovery was made by Mrs. Hal Hanson, daughter of the dead man, who in company with her sister, Mrs. Ida Cooley, walked out of the ranch when their father did not return home in time for super as was his custom. The body was found in a reclining position at the edge of the grain field, sheltered by a clump of bushes. Nearby was a scythe with which he had been cutting grass. Mr. Cota has been subject to fainting spells of late and is it believed that he was seized with one of these attacks while at work in one of the fields. There was not a sign of a struggle and death must have occurred shortly after he was stricken and laid down in the shade. There was evidence that he had partaken of his Monday meal indicating that death had occurred during the evening meal.

The horse that Mr. Cota drove to the ranch each day gave alarm to Mrs. Hansen who arrived at the ranch ahead of her, who was attracted by the animal who was running around in the field as if something was wrong. Walking up to the field she ran across the scythe and stone and still under further investigation revealed the lifeless body.

Joseph Cota was born in Canada and had he lived until July he would have reached his 78th birthday. He came to Nevada County in his early years and for years lived on the ranch in which he died. Some 16 or 17 years ago he built the house on East Main Street, where he lived with his family. Although of a reserved nature, Joseph Cota made many friends and the news of his death will be met with sincere regret.

Surviving him are a widow Mary T Cota; two daughters, Mrs. Ida Cooley and Mrs. Josie Hansen and two sons; Alfred and Edward W Cota.
