Carl was the fifth of seven children born to George Philipp Gutmann and Katharina Louise Wenzel. Along with his parents and siblings he immigrated to the US in 1884. On 26 Oct 1897 he married Leona Sweeney and they had one child, Ethel. Early in life Carl was employed as a driver and a baker in a pretzel bakery. At the time of his death he was the sexton at St. George Church. He died at the age of 48 of obstruction of the bowels.
