As a young lady, Nellie left the farm for Minneapolis, where she took a course in dressmaking. There she met Robert Smith, who had a barber shop. They were married in Minneapolis July 18, 1905. From there they moved to Stockton, Cal., and later to Great Falls, Mont., where they built and managed the Lincoln Apartments.
In 1943 the Smiths bought the homestead farm in Drammen Twp., where they farmed until Robert's death. Nellie remained on the farm, leasing the land to neighbors, until she moved to the Volga Retirement Home, where she remained for three years. She then came to live with Mr. and Mrs. Sigurd Vick of Lake Benton for one year. She was a sister of Sigurd. Her last three years were spent at the Hendricks Nursing Home, where she passed away.
Nellie was preceded in death by her husband; five brothers and seven sisters. She is survived by one sister, Hannah, Mrs. Art White of Brownlee, Sask., Canada; two sisters-in-law, Annie, Mrs. Sigurd Vick, Hendricks and Josie, Mrs. George Vick, Dawson, as well as many nieces and nephews.
