Marie Vick was born in October of 1873 at Holden, Goodhue County, Minnesota. She was the eldest child of Jonas and Sophia Vick, both of whom were originally from Norway.

In 1895, at the age of 21, she became the second wife of 55 year old widower George Washington Brown. By 1900, they were residing on a 320 acre farm in Richland Township of Brookings County, SD. On the US Census of that year, she reported that she had given birth to 5 children and that only two of them were still living at that time. They were Celia, age 3, and Roy, age 4 months. Also living with them was Marie's 76 year-old maternal grandmother, Ingeborg Olson, who was born in Norway.

Marie became a widow in 1905 when her first husband G.W. Brown passed away. In 1906, she filed for his Civil War Veteran's Pension. By 1907 she was married to Charles Lang.

In the US Census of 1910, Marie's last name was Lang. She had two additional children named Harriet and Charles E. Lang. Also living with her were her children with George W. Brown: Celia, Roy, Robert, and Raymond. She would also give birth to a daughter named Bernice Lang in 1912.

By the time that the US Census of 1920 was taken, she was living at Richland Township under the surname of Brown. At that time, she had six children living with her, ranging in age from 8 to 20. It is unusual that she would resume the use of the name Brown afterward. She listed her occupation as 'General Farmer'.

The next known record for Marie (Vick) was in 1935 when the South Dakota State Census was taken. By this time, she had married James Husted, but he had already passed away, as she listed herself as an unmarried widow. She recorded her faith as being Lutheran and her occupation as Housewife.

In 1940, she appears in the US Census taken at Alton Township of Brookings County, South Dakota. She went by the surname Husted, but she was living with her 30 year-old son Charles E. Lang. He was a farmer, and she claimed no occupation at that time.

At the age of 71, Marie (Vick) Husted was recorded in the 1945 South Dakota State Census living near the town of Bushnell in the Township of Alton in Brookings County, South Dakota. She had changed faiths from Lutheran to Methodist and listed her occupation as that of Housekeeper.
