ELWOOD GIRL KILLS FIANCE

Glenn Harney 22 Victim Of Gun Thought By Sweetheart To Be Toy Gun
A .22 caliber pistol in the hands of his sweethearts Miss Ruth Stewart 19, ended the life of Glenn Harney 22 last evening at the home of Miss Stewart's brother Ray Stewart residing northeast of Elwood.

The accident occurred about 8 o'clock following a suggestion by the group which included the girl and her fiancé, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Stewart and another brother Glenn that they engage in a card game. Miss Stewart left the house to get a pack of playing cards which were thought to have been in the pocket of Harney's car parked outside and finding the gun which she thought was a toy pistol, returning to the back yard where she placed it against young Harney's side and pulled the trigger. All Harney could say following the gun-shot was "Take me to a doctor". He was rushed to the Mercy Hospital here in the York ambulance but physicians said he was dead when he was admitted to the hospital.

Miss Stewart and young Harney were to have been married in September, it was stated by relatives they had been engaged for some time. The youth was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Carey R. Harney, 413 N 12th St. and was employed at the G.I. Sellers and Sons Factory here.

According to a statement from his mother the gun had been kept in a desk at the home and she was not aware that it had been removed or that it had been in the possession of the youth until investigation after the accident revealed that it was missing from the usual place of concealment. Miss Stewart after firing the shot is said to have exclaimed that she thought the pistol was only a toy gun, she is near prostration from grief today. She lives with her parents Mr. and Mrs. George M. Stewart, 803 N 13th St.
Funeral services for young Harney will be held Friday afternoon from the East Main Street Christian Church at 3 o'clock, Rev R.W. Sage pastor of the First Baptist Church will have charge of the funeral and burial will be made in the City Cemetery. Surviving the young man are his parents Mr. and Mrs. Carey Harney, a brother Eugene and a step-sister Miss Zola Goforth, all at home. Dr. S.J. Stottlemeyer is here today investigating the shooting but has given no verdict as yet.
