Elam was one of six brothers who served in the Confederate Army only one of which would survive. He and his brothers first served in Co. I. 3rd Infantry Regiment, Sixth Division, Missouri State Guard. They would all later enlist in Co. E. 5th Missouri Infantry. The brothers were:
Pvt. John Dyson age 36, died of disease in Arkansas in 1862.
Pvt. Barton Dyson, age 32, died of disease while home on leave in March, 1862. He left a widow and a two year old son.
Manilus Dyson, age 30 survived the war.
Absalom Robey Dyson, age 31 was mortally wounded at Champion's Hill, Mississippi on May 14, 1863 and died in a hospital in Selma, Alabama on September 10, 1864. He left a widow, Louisa on their small farm.
Franklin Dyson, age 22 died of disease at Columbus, Mississippi on June 5, 1862.
Elam was previously wounded in the stomach at Pea Ridge, Arkansas. He was mortally wounded on November 30th and died in a Franklin, Tennessee Confederate Hospital in December, 1864.
Their parent were: Thomas Dyson and Anna {Roby} Dyson of Franklin Co., Missouri.

Inscription

Was originally buried in Rest Haven Cemetery, Franklin but in April 1866 was removed to the Confederate Cemetery.
