Onzelle Winters Young
Onzelle Cummins Wiinters Young, 90, of Ethelsville, Ala. died Aug. 25, 2003 at the Pickens County Medical Center in Carrollton, Ala. Services were Wednesday, Aug. 27, at Union Chapel Baptist Church in Ethelsville, Rev. Tim McHerg officiating, assisted by Rev. Wes Jones and Rev. Elliot Gray. Burial was in Forest Cemetery in Ethelsville. Gunter & Peel Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Young was born Dec. 10, 1912 in Longview, Oktibbeha County, Miss. to the late Andrew Daniel and Hattie Leslie Scoggins Cummins. She lived most of her life in West Point, where she was a charter member of Calvary Baptist Churcy. She belonged to the Marth Chapter #53 Order of the Eastern Star and Union Chapel Baptist Church of Ethelsville. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Ivy Lewis Winters Sr. and Earl Young; a son, Ivy Lewis Winters Jr.; grandchildren Clayton Purvis Winters Jr. and Harold Lloyd Hood; step-children Jewel W. Gardner, Preston, Hansel, Everett and Robert Winters; brothers Alson, Onie and Bob Cummins; a sister, Julia Thompson; and 15 half-brothers and sisters.
Survivors include sons Clayton Winters (Louise) of Akron, Ala. and Raymond Winters (Karen) of Steens; daughters Marie Shepherd of Princeton, Ky., Maxine Wiggins (Bill) of Signal Mountain, Tenn., and Kathleen Griffin (Charlie) of Ethelsville, Ala.; grandchildren Milford Walters, Pam Owens, Paralee Kelley, Linda Johnson, Jon Thomas Shepherd, Janette Shepherd, Reed Shepherd, Gaye Stewart, Bill Hood Jr., Jenny Childs, Daniel Griffin, Charlie Griffin, Daisy Griffin, Rivers Griffin and Sarah Griffin; also 20 great-grandchildren, 11 great-great-grandchildren. She also had 13 ste-grandchldren and numerous step-great and great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Jon Thomas Shepherd Jr., Rev. Reed Winters Shepherd, Daniel Griffin, Charlie Griffin, Rivers Griffin, Josh Johnson, Joel Johnson and Max Gardner.
