On August 24, 1824 in Bond County, Illinois he married Jane Lee; they then had Nancy, Mary Ann, Caroline, Elias and John.
In 1835 Jacob, along with four of his brother-in-law's families and his mother-in-law moved to Henry County, Iowa. Once in Iowa four or five more children were born to Jacob and Jane: Jane, Julia Ann, Delila, (possibly Schillar), and William. Jacob purchased land in 1840 and by 1850 was the owner of a farm valued at $1,700.
In 1848 Jane passed away leaving him with several young children at home. Jacob then married a widow, Sarah Daniels, who brought her own little boy Ezeriah (Ezenato?) into the home. By 1859 Jacob had added three more children to the home: Moses, Smith and George and owned at least 128 acres. Sarah and Jacob went on to have four more children, Carrie, Mary, James and Margaret.
In addition to farming and raising his large family, Jacob was active in the M E Church. He was a member of the first class ever held in New London and served as a Class-Leader for many years. He also served as a School Director and Road Supervisor; several times he served on the grand jury of Henry County, Iowa.
