Born Dec. 9, 1918, in Midlothian, he was the son of the late Alfred E. Drew Sr. and Annie (Artz) Drew. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Anna Dodds and Nellie Allen; and five brothers, George, Edward, Ernest, Ralph and William Drew.
Mr. Drew worked at Stewart's Clothing Store, the Celanese Plant, and retired from the State of Maryland. He was a proud World War II Purple Heart Army veteran, who was injured during his tour of duty. Mr. Drew was awarded the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star and the French Citation. He attended Shaft United Methodist Church and was a life member of Farrady Post 24 American Legion with over 50 years of membership. Also, he was a member of the D.A.V. of Cumberland, V.F.W., Lonaconing, Maryland Fraternal Order of Police, Republican Club and AARP.
Surviving are his wife of 69 years, Viola Matthews Drew; and his daughter, Carolyn Brown and her husband Henry Brown; one sister, Gertrude Loy; brothers and sisters-in-law, Hugh and Norma Matthews, Leo and Patricia Hollern, Elmira Drew, Ruth Drew; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Sowers Funeral Home, P.A., on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2011, at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Harry L. Burchell officiating.
Interment will be in Frostburg Memorial Park.
Farrady Post 24 will accord military honors at the graveside.
Pallbearers will be the following members of the Frostburg American Legion Farrady Post 24 Honor Guard, Robert Coburn, Kenneth Kline, Clyde Kenney, John Thomas, Ronald Laber and John Ralston.
