Born Feb. 16, 1926 in Midlothian, he was the son of the late Alfred and Annie (Artz) Drew. Mr. Drew retired following 21 years of service from the United States Army. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean conflict and survived the sinking of the ship Leopoldville on Christmas Eve of 1944. Among honors he received were the Expert Infantry Badge; Combat Infantry Badge; First and Second Award; Bronze Star; three Purple Hearts; Good Conduct medals; American Defense medal; American Campaign medal; European medal; African medal; Middle Eastern Campaign medal; two Battle Stars; Army of Occupation of Germany, Airplane for Berlin Airlift 48 and 49; National Defense Service medal; Korean Service Ribbon with three battle stars; and the United Nations Korean Service medal. Mr. Drew also retired from the Delta Mining Company. He belonged to the Cumberland Disabled American Veterans, the Midland Sportsmen's Club, the Lonaconing Republican Club and the American Legion Farrady Post 24.
Surviving are his widow, Ruth (Wolford) Drew; six sons, Ralph Lee Drew, Larry F. Drew and Robert Drew, Frostburg; Charles Drew, Gaithersburg; Roy Drew, Hagerstown; and Michael Drew, Virginia Beach, Va.; four daughters, Shirley A. Wade, Virginia Beach; Mary Jo Rankin, Frostburg; Debra Drew, Shaft; and Elaine Drew, Hagerstown; two sisters, Anna Dodds, Potomac Park; and Gertrude Loy, Cumberland; one brother, Alfred Drew, Grahamtown; and four grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Sowers Funeral Home in Frostburg Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Monday from 2 to 4 and and 7 to 9 p.m. Services will be held there Tuesday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. T. William Preston.
Interment will be in Rocky Gap Veterans Cemetery. Graveside military rites will be accorded by American Legion Farrady Post 24. Mr. Drew's six sons will serve as pallbearers.
