Mr. Alt was born March 30, 1911, in Petersburg, W.Va., and was a son of the late David and Jenny Kimble Alt.
He lived in the Pittsburgh, Pa. area before moving to California in the early 1940's. After two years, he moved to Harrisonburg area.
He was a heavy equipment operator for over 40 years, working for various construction companies and was a member of the Greenmount Church of the Brethren. He was an avid outdorrsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing.
In March 1933, he married the former Fannie Garber, who preceded him in death in January 1955. In February 1965, he married the former Evelyn Neff, who preceded him in death in January 1992.
Surviving are a daughter, Dawn Shelton, Tallahassee, Fla., two sons, Darwin F. Alt, Manassas, and Marlin P. Alt, New Market, two sisters, Nina Sabo and Dora Van Meter, both of Landes, W.Va., two brothers, Raymond Alt, Landes, W.Va., and Arch Alt, Cumberland, Md., 10 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
The Rev. Charles Chip Letterman will conduct a memorial service at 11 a.m. Saturday at the McMullen Funeral Home in Harrisonburg.
