From childhood he worked in the woods and sawmill. In 1904 he and his oldest brother bought the sawmill at Dover South Mills and sawed long lumber for many years.
After selling the business Mr. Merrill conducted a store and junk wood business until his retirement.
After his wife's death in 1956, Mr. Merrill sold his home at Dover South Mills where he had lived for 57 years, and came to this town to live with his daughter, Mrs. Alden.
Surviving are a son, Kilborn, of Pittsfield; five daughters, Mrs. Virgie Alden, Mrs. Laura Warren and Mrs. Sybil Warren of Dover-Foxcroft; Mrs. Ena Drew of East Machias; and Mrs. Helen [sic, ie Helene] Bulmer of Bangor; two brothers, Guy and Arthur of Dover-Foxcroft; one sister, Mrs. Marion Fairbrother of Augusta; two grandchilden, nieces and nephews.
Services were held Saturday at 2:00 at the Lary Funeral Home, the Rev. John Oulton, pastor of the Advent Christian Church officiating. Burial was in Pine Grove Cemetery. Bearers were Lewis and Colby Warren of Dover-Foxcroft, Clayton Drew, East Machias, and Edward Bulmer, Bangor.
