Dover-Foxcroft and Brooksville, Fla.—Ena Ernestine Merrill Drew, wife of the late Clayton Ellery Drew, pharmacist, died April 3, 1996, in Brooksville, Fla. She was born April 24, 1906, the daughter of Ernest and Rosa (Lane) Merrill.
Mrs. Drew was a graduate with high honors of the Foxcroft Academy, a graduate and valedictorian of Beal College in Bangor, and attended the University of Maine, Orono. After her graduation from Foxcroft Academy, she was employed by several businesses and professionals including the late Honorable Frank E. Guernsey and the University of Maine Extension Service.
After completing her formal education, she taught at Beal College in Bangor, Hampden Academy in Hampden and Washington Academy in East Machias. Ena held a teacher's life certificate. After retirement from teaching at the Washington Academy, she assisted her husband as bookkeeper and clerk at their pharmacy in East Machias. She was an accomplished pianist, and served as pianist at the Advent Christian Church in Dover-Foxcroft where she was an active member and Sunday school teacher until entering college in Bangor.
After marriage and moving to East Machias, she became a member of the First Baptist Church in East Machias. She was a member of the Maine Association of Retirees, Inc., a member of the Maude E. Kingsley Literary Club of East Machias, a member of the Rebekah Lodge, a member of the Washington County Democratic Association, and an honorary member of the Washington County Officials Association.
She is survived by one sister-in-law, Mary Merrill of Pittsfield and Brooksville, Fla., two sisters-in-law, Adelaude [sic] Rogers and Lillian McDonald, both of East Machias, two nephews, a grandnephew, grandnieces, great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews, many cousins and friends. She was pre-deceased by a brother-in-law, J. Colby Warren.
A graveside service will be announced at a later date and will be held at the Pine Grove Cemetery, Dover-Foxcroft. Memorial donations may be made to the Advent Christian Church of Dover-Foxcroft, care of Louise Whitten, 28 High St., Dover-Foxcroft, 04426. Arrangements by Donald H. Shorey Funeral Chapel, 35 Hartland Ave., Pittsfield.
