OBITUARY:
Lt. Joe Bator, Jr., 48, died Wednesday, Feb. 4th, at a San Diego hospital. He was a native of Old Saybrook, Connecticut and had been a resident of Vista for 24 years. He was a Lieutenant in the San Diego County Sheriff's Dept. and had been in the Sheriff's Dept. for 21 years. He was hired as a Deputy Sheriff on November 26, 1965, and as a Deputy, served in detentions, North County Patrol, served with the North County Detectives and as a Helicopter Observer. He was promoted to Sergeant on October 26, 1979 at the Vista Station. On September 23, 1983, he was promoted to Lieutenant and served one year in Central Jail before being made Commander of the Fallbrook Substation on April 28, 1984. A review of Lieutenant Bator's evaluations reveal that those who supervised him used words such as conscientious, hardworking, innovative & extremely dedicated to the department. He had served in the United States Marine Corps from 1956 to 1964, where he received the rank of Sergeant and received an honorable discharge. Lieutenant Bator was currently filling the position of Chairman of the City of Vista's Traffic Advisory Commission and was a member of the Exchange Club of Vista and the Rotary Club of Fallbrok. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Bator of Vista; a son, Mathew Allen Bator of Vista; two daughters, Charlotte Allen Cox of Reno, Nevada and Donna Maxfield of Sparks, Nevada; and two granchildren. Memorial services will be held Friday, February 6th at 11 a.m. at the Community Church of Vista. The family suggests contributions in his memory to the American Heart Association.
