A graduate of Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA., and the New York University School of Law, he moved to California in 1915 and became a partner in "Meserve, Mumper, and Hughes" law firm. He met his wife, Winifred Cora Ambrose
in Los Angeles and settled there to raise his family. He passed from ASHD and sustained an MI at age 78 years.
