John was the son of John S. Sr, and Adeline Amelia Garey Grassfield, born in Marion, Linn Co, Iowa. He married in 1922 at Cedar Rapids, IA to Ellen Wicks. They owned a Bake Shop and Resturant in Blomington, IL for many years. They has a son, William Wicks Grassfield who died as an infant and is buried Oak Shade Cemetery, Marion, Iowa. Also a son, Richard and an adopted son Graham Grassfield. John and Ellen were divorce in the 1950's. He married again to Katherine (Kay) Taylor.
