Funeral serviced for J. S. Grassfield, pioneer of Linn Co, was held at the Paris M. E. church on Friday, Nov. 19 with the Rev Clyde Scott of Marion in charge, assisted by the Rev. Robert J. Thompson of Urbana. The Masonic order had charge at the cemetery. Burial was made in Oak Shade cemetery at Marion. Music was furnished by Ridge Slofield and Walter Ellsworth with Mrs Ellsworth as accompanist. all bearers were frank Mills, Charles Hall, Owen Bremer, Frank O'Meara, Al Hoffman,Will McTavish.
John S. Grassfield, son of Peter A. and Ann Johnson Grassfield was born in Prairieburg, Jan 12, 1861 and died at his home in Paris at the age of 76 years 10 months and 5 days. At an early age his family moved to Paris where he grew to manhood. He completed his education in the Marion public school. He taught school for several years in Linn Co. He married Adeline Garey on June 5, 1899. To this union were born five children, Ralph, Stuart, Samuel, John, Jr and Mignon. Samuel died in infancy.
John entered the mercantile business in Paris in 1896 and the greater part of the remainder of his life was spent at that place.
Mrs grassfield died in Feb, 1912. On March 24, 1917 he was united in marriage to Hattie Toom of Cedar Rapids.
Mr Grassfield was a man who had caught the gleam of living, his interest in all the vital affairs of life was always in evidence. He was a member of the Methodist Church, Level Lodge NO. 284 A.F.&A. M. of Central City. He leaves to mourn his departure, his wife Hattie, three sons, Ralph of Jacksonville, FL, Stuart of Sioux City, John, Jr. Bloomington, IL one daughter, Mignon Evans of Walker. One step son, James Toom of Central City. Seven grandchildren,three step grandchildren and one brother, Peter A. Grassfield of Fairhope, Ala/
