"He was the youngest son[1] of Deacon Nathaniel Ely (1716–1799) and Abigail (Colton) Ely (1724–1770); his mother died when he was 5. He was graduated from Yale College in 1787. He studied law. Ely was admitted to the bar in 1791. Ely commenced practice in Springfield, Massachusetts.

Ely served as a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives from 1801–1803.

Rep. William Ely was a three-term representative for Massachusetts’ 5th congressional district, from 1805 to 1815. He was a Federalist. Ely missed 143 of 1,352 roll call votes, which is 10.6%. This is better than the median of 18.4% among the lifetime records of representatives serving in Mar 1815. He was succeeded by Elijah H. Mills."
