William was a professor of physics and chemistry and an author. He married Mary Alice Heulings on his birthday in 1886 following receipt of his Doctorate from Syracuse University. He eventually settled in Trenton, NJ., where he and Mary had three children; Alice (1888), Hewlings (1889), and Norris (1891). Mary Alice died in August of 1896, leaving William with three small children. He remarried in 1898, to Amelia Cooper Hewitt, who was a collegue at the New Jersy State Normal School and also a professor of chemistry. They had a single son, Conrad Hewitt Mumper (1900). William is buried next to Amelia.
