John was a farmer and a stockman and in 1880 he and his mother came to Texas to live, settling at Nicholsville (later called Wylie). With him and his mother came his sister Elizabeth F. Dowdy, who married W.F. Russell of Wylie in 1883. The mother, Sarah G. Wells Dowdy, was married three times, first to Mr. Mayes by whome she had three children. Her second marriage was to Dowdy. Her third marriage was to Joe Thomasson and they had no children.
